Non-Immigrant O-X insurance requirements
Ten years of residence, open to fourteen nationalities, with the strictest insurance condition of any Thai long-stay visa — and the one people most often fall foul of after they arrive.
What the requirement is
TGIA states the policy must have cover of not less than 400,000 baht per policy year for in-patient treatment, and not less than 40,000 baht per policy year for out-patient treatment.
These are the figures widely misquoted as the O-A requirement. Here they are current and correct. Why that matters if you are applying for an O-A.
It has to be a Thai policy
Unlike the O-A, an overseas insurer is not an option. TGIA states the policy must be a Thai health insurance policy, and that applicants should contact authorised insurance companies directly.
Every applicant needs their own certificate — a spouse and children each need one, not a single family document.
The condition that catches people out
The O-X insurance requirement is not a hurdle you clear once at application. TGIA states that each applicant must ensure they have always held the Thai health insurance policy throughout the granted period of stay, and that failing to meet this is treated as no longer meeting the standard requirements — with the granted visa withdrawn.
On a visa measured in five-year blocks, that turns an administrative slip into an immigration problem. A policy that lapses because a card expired, a renewal notice went to an old address, or an insurer declined to renew is the risk to plan around — not the premium.
It is worth knowing whether your insurer can decline renewal, and on what grounds, before you commit to a ten-year visa that depends on them.
Who can apply
The O-X is open to nationals of 14 countries and you must be 50 or over on the day of application. TGIA names 12 of them: Japan, Australia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom.
We have deliberately not filled in the remaining 2. TGIA gives a count of 14 but names these, and guessing at a nationality on a visa page is precisely the kind of confident wrong answer that gets someone turned away. Confirm the full list with the Thai embassy handling your application.
How much insurance does the O-X visa require?
Not less than 400,000 baht per policy year for in-patient treatment and not less than 40,000 baht per policy year for out-patient treatment, per TGIA.
Can I use an overseas policy for the O-X?
No. TGIA states the policy must be a Thai health insurance policy from an authorised company. The overseas-insurer route with a signed certificate applies to the O-A, not the O-X.
What happens if my O-X insurance lapses?
TGIA states cover must be held throughout the granted period of stay, and that failing to meet this is treated as no longer meeting the requirement, with the visa withdrawn. It is checked as an ongoing condition, not only at application.
Does my spouse need their own policy?
Yes. TGIA states each applicant, including spouse and children, must have their own health insurance certificate to present.
